Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3 bicarbonate) can be used as an adsorbent for flue gas desulfurization. It can remove acidic pollutants in flue gas through chemical adsorption. Meanwhile, it can also remove some organic and inorganic trace substances in flue gas through physical adsorption.

In this process, sodium bicarbonate is directly subdivided and sprayed into flue gas at high temperature. Under high temperature, sodium bicarbonate is decomposed into sodium carbonate Na2CO3, water (H2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2). The newly generated sodium carbonate has high reactivity at the moment of formation and can spontaneously react with acid substances in flue gas
